Staring back at you from the cover of their '74 debut as ABBA were the two couples (l to r): Anni-Frid Lyngstad (28, vocals) and Benny Andersson (27, piano, keyboards, mellotron, clavinet, vocals) with Björn Ulvaeus (28, acoustic and electric guitars, vocals) and Agnetha Fältskog (23, vocals). The shot was taken at a 16th century castle in Mariefred, Southern Sweden. Quite who's in the background playing the part of Napoleon is unclear! Whilst charming at times, their strange old mix of pop-glam, jazz-funk and euroschlager is a bit of a hit or a miss; the two singles “Waterloo” and “Money Honey” certainly falling into the former category. Within a month of the album's March '74 release, the aforementioned “Waterloo” swept to victory in the Eurovision song contest held at the Brighton Dome. The single was a chart-topper in the UK and several countries, and went Top 10 in the States. It would go on to shift six million units, making it one of the world's all-time biggest selling singles. No longer a small Swedish act, ABBA had arrived on the world stage.
