“Lady Soul” by Aretha Franklin - album review

TJR says

Another big success for Aretha Franklin and Atlantic Records, a million selling album spawning three Top Ten hits in the Billboard 100, “Chain Of Fools” (#2), “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” (#8) and “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone” (#5). Gospel/R&B singer Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney Houston) and her group the Sweet Inspirations are credited as background vocals on several tracks, along with Aretha’s sisters Carolyn and Emma Franklin. As good as it is, I can’t help but be disappointed with the subtle shift towards the cabaret soul revue – the southern grit that was so magnificent on “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)” has clearly been diluted. Still, it’s on the cool radar all the same - I shall take what I’m given and be grateful. “People Get Ready” is the fantastic highlight…
