“The Basement Tapes” by Bob Dylan and The Band - album review

TJR says

Bob Dylan’s second LP back at Columbia, and his second of 1975, was a tricky one to handle for my discography rules. Whilst all material is new to Bob’s album story, it is basically eight years past its recording date and thereby relegated to “b-list” status. However, many others regard this as a new Dylan proper, especially since overdub work was done on many of the tracks in 1975. These were Bob’s first recordings post “Blonde On Blonde”, his first recordings after his motorbike accident in the summer of ’66, recordings which spanned several months from the Spring of 1967 onwards. The involvement of The Band pulls Bob away from his left field leanings towards a more contemporary centre ground, although many would describe the genre as “alt. country”. I guess it depends on your perspective. Alternative in terms of the fact that it ain’t all polished in the studio, maybe. The album further struggles with credibility given the fact that only 16 of the 24 recordings actually feature Bob and 8 are solely Band pieces recorded between 1967 and 1975. The '75 overdubs were added to songs from both categories. “The Basement Tapes”, at 76 minutes runtime, can be a bit of a chore at times, but is well worth a dig through for some great moments and some which are not so great but historically interesting all the same. Good stuff all in all, though if I was a Dylan fan in ’75 I’d only be mildly interested – and much more keen to hear his real new material…
