The second Canned Heat album of 1968 was a sprawling two-record set, with mixed results over the 90 minutes. Featuring guest appearances from Joe Sample, John Mayall, Doctor John, Charley Patton and John Fahey, there’s no doubt that this band were now fully respected bluesmen - not just record collectors! It also gave the band another massive hit, “Going Up The Country”, an amazing song credited to Al Wilson but, in reality, completely derived from Henry Thomas’s “Bulldoze Blues” from 1928. Cheeky sods really. The duet with Joe Sample on “Sandy’s Blues” is another excellent highlight, a soulful ballad in a “Need Your Love So Bad” style. All is not entirely rosey in the garden however. Beware the “Refried Boogie” - one live 40 minutes jam track taking up sides C and D of the original LP. That’ve been the time for a festival wander, a beer, an indian head message, a trip to the record stall, 40 winks in the meditation tent, anything but the “Refried Boogie”…
