Would have made for a fine debut but, for whatever reason, it wasn’t to be. Producer Johnny Otis recorded the band’s first (unreleased) album in 1966 with the ensemble of Bob Hite (vocals), Alan Wilson (slide guitar, vocals, harmonica), Henry Vestine (lead guitar), Stuart Brotman (bass) and Frank Cook (drums). The record was not actually released until 1970 when it appeared as “Vintage”, released by Janus Records. 2 of the tracks would make it to the 1967 debut album proper - “Big Road Blues” and “Rollin’ And Tumblin’”. Straight away it’s clear these guys know their blues business. 9 of the 10 are covers, with Bo Diddley’s “Pretty Thing” and Elmore James’s “Can’t Hold Out” underlining Canned Heat’s impressive credentials…
