“Dusty In Memphis” by Dusty Springfield - album review

It's not easy for a pop girl to hold my affections, but Dusty seems to hold up rather well. “Dusty In Memphis” was her first release for Atlantic Records, and they give it first class backing utilising Wilson Pickett's Memphis Cats as well as Aretha Franklin's backing singers, the Sweet Inspirations. With hindsight, the album has come to be classified as one of the greatest of all-time, but there's no way I'd subscribe to that view - it's way too safe for me - but “Son Of A Preacher Man” was triumphant and “Breakfast In Bed” was touching. Too much Mann / Weil, Goffin / King, Bacharach / David and not enough proper soul - a wasted opportunity methinks.
