“Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player” by Elton John - album review

TJR says

“Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player” pleads the 22-year-old; did he think we wouldn't notice that he sung and wrote them all too? Features his core band of himself on pianos and keyboards, Davey Johnstone on guitars, Dee Murray bass and Nigel Olsson on drums. It was recorded in the same French castle as the preceding “Honky Château”, and was bolstered by a number of the local horn players. His blandness irritates me greatly - I think it's the fact that he's so popular and successful that makes it ten times worse. The LP reached number one in the UK, the US and Australia, among other countries, and housed two major hit singles; the borderline novelty “Crocodile Rock” had been climbing the charts in the 4 weeks prior to the album's January '73 release, and the utterly drippy “Daniel” would soon begin it's Top 40 ascent in the springtime. Now, Colt 45 or Magnum Sir?
