“Promised Land” by Elvis Presley - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1975 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s |
Following on from the inappropriately titled “Good Times” 10 months earlier, this was the second album assembled from his December '73 sessions at Stax Records studios in Memphis. The album was released on Presley's 40th birthday on January 8th, 1975. Despite being the second-picks, this set is actually preferable to “Good Times”, although that's saying very little. My middle-of-the-road complaints remain, this fare's as soft-as-putty. One listen to “Promised Land” tells you all you need to know; Chuck Berry's stupendously exciting Rock n Roll original is reduced to bland Alabama pub-rock standards. And that's one of the better tracks here…
