In September 1970, Jimi Hendrix died after a jam session with Eric Burdon & War at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club in London. The tragedy took it’s toll on Burdon, who would often break down on stage in the following months. On February 5th, 1971 he finally left the band in the middle of their European tour, allegedly due to exhaustion. After returning home and taking time off, the bulk of his next album was recorded in summer with vocals from blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon. 5 Burdon or Witherspoon originals were onboard, along with 4 cover versions of James Taylor, John Mayall, Chuck Berry and St. Louis Jimmy tunes. The latter’s “Going Down Slow” was recorded live in May 1971 in the San Quentin State Prison and didn’t feature Witherspoon, nor did “Home Dream” which had been culled from a previous Burdon / War session. The results were weary on this one, all very pleasant but with nothing worth returning for…
