“The Black-Man’s Burdon” by Eric Burdon and War - album review

TJR says

The second of two 1970 albums by the group before Burdon left and the remaining band continued as War. The album’s title is a pun on the poem “The White Man’s Burden” (1899) by Rudyard Kipling, which refers to (and champions) American imperialism (including its history of slavery). In response to the poem “The Black Man’s Burden”, an expression which refers to black slavery, was the title of a book by E. D. Morel (1920). And so, Burdon continues with his 2-Tone message. At 90 minutes long though, the album is hard going, tends towards the progressive and incorporates all sorts of jazz, latin, soul, funk, rock and psychedelia into its DNA. There’s an underlying sense of humour that just about saves the album from total disconnection. And it IS all for a good cause…
