“Classic Scots Ballads” by Ewan MacColl with Peggy Seeger - album review
features in: (B-list) Album Chart of 1956 ● (B-list) Album Chart of the 1950s |
4 of these titles had recently appeared on “The English and Scottish Popular Ballads” albums on Riverside Records, 1 had appeared on “Scots Folk Songs”, hence the b-list status. It was the practice in Northeast Scotland for ploughmen to be housed in shacks (bothies) away from the main farm building, and when the day’s work was finished the evening would be given over to the singing of songs such as “Mormond Braes”, my favourite on the album. The lass in the song has been jilted, but takes it philosophically, figuring there’s plenty more fish in the sea. She’s heading into town where she’s confident of finding a new lover. That’s the game!
