“Telekon” by Gary Numan - album review

TJR says

Another good 'un from the 22-year-old machine-man, giving him a third consecutive UK#1 if you include the final Tubeway Army album, and why not? If I'd raise any complaint it'd be that he should have included the two preceding singles, “We Are Glass” (#5) and “I Die: You Die” (#6) to give it at least some degree of uplifting connection. “This Wreckage” (#20) was the sole single, opening the album with the rather depressing question “And what if God's dead? We must have done something wrong.” Top of the Pops, here we come! There's more death on the agenda in “The Aircrash Bureau” whilst the cheerless title-track offers: “It's hard to breathe, it's hard to breathe, You end on reel one, You end on reel one”. By the time of “Remind Me To Smile”, a song about feeling crushed by the pressures of fame, you don't know whether to laugh or cry. I can take it no problem to be honest, and the album is a solid, if unspectacular, listen all the way.
