ON THIS DAY - 14th May
Sat-14-May-2016 Hamilton Academical [h] D2-2 (SPFL Premiership - game 38)
- 2 poor defences, 2 keepers at fault. Doolan's header at the back post (2) and Amoo's back post bundle (19) put Thistle ahead twice but Accies scored with a soft pen conceded by Scully (11) and he was rounded looking slow (20). Accies (the better team) hit woodwork twice, Thistle once. Still, in top flight! Finished 9th.
Sun-14-May-2006 Peterhead [a] W2-1 (Scottish First Division play-off Final, 2nd leg) aet; agg: 3-3; W4-2 pens
- AET. AGG: 3-3. Won 4-2 on pens. Peterhead went 1-up (5) but Roberts scored (swivel and shot, 8). Peterhead hit woodwork twice and missed a sitter before a 25-yard free-kick from Gibson (B) (90+) took the tie to goalless ET. Ritchie netted the final pen. A win v Peterhead at last and promotion the hard way.
Sat-14-May-1994 Heart of Midlothian [h] L0-1 (SFL Premier Division - game 44)
- “Whistle was a blessing for weary Thistle” (GH). The win put Hearts safe. Defeat meant Thistle avoided relegation by 1 goal from St Johnstone (-11 to -12). 3 mins after Gibson shot over when a defender slipped, a header (86) separated the teams in a dire match that had looked like a certain 0-0 draw.
Sat-14-May-1983 Clydebank [a] W2-1 (SFL First Division - game 39)
- Johnston nodded in a Park corner at the far post (2) and with the Clydebank defence looking for off-side McDowall shot home a Johnston cross (30). Thistle ended the season (with the equivalent of almost 61 matches) a point behind Clydebank in 4th place. (Full report not found.)
Fri-14-May-1965 Clyde [h] W2-0 (Summer Cup Section 2 - game 5)
- Roxburgh (on his debut) ran the show, setting up the 1st goal and scoring the 2nd. McParland lashed home Roxburgh's pass (8). Clyde hit the bar just on h-t. Hainey's pass set up Roxburgh (62). Hainey hit the bar late on and tempers became frayed, Roxburgh coming in for “special” treatment.
Sat-14-May-1927 Rangers [n] W6-3 (Glasgow Charity Cup Final) aet
- AET. Goals by Grove (18) and Hair (23) gave Thistle a 2-goal lead against a much weakened Rangers team but they rallied and led 3-2 at h-t. It was all Thistle after that and Hair equalised (65). 3 more goals by Hair in extra time gave Thistle a fine win giving Hair 49 goals for the season.
Wed-14-May-1924 King's Park [a] W*1-1 (Stirling Charity Cup Final) * W4-1 corners
- 1,500 spectators paid £35 and saw an even match (the cup last competed for in 1897). The opening goal came for King's Park with a shot on the run (75) but when a defender tried to clear a Salisbury cross (the keeper had it covered) the ball spun off his boot (80). Thistle won 4-2 on corners. The PT players got gold badges.
Sat-14-May-1904 Queen's Park [h] L1-2 (Friendly)
- “Both clubs played experimental elevens” (SC). Queens were the better team and were good value for their h-t lead. There was “no holding them” (GH) and they scored a beauty. Proudfoot got Thistle on the score sheet late on with a breakaway and goalmouth scramble.
Tue-14-May-1901 Rangers [h] L0-2 (Friendly)
- Thistle, with 2 guests and the famous “Newman” in the line-up had the better of the 1st half but couldn't score. Roles were reversed after the break and Rangers went 1-up (55) at which point “the game degenerated somewhat, the teams not exerting themselves” (GH) before they got a 2nd.
Fri-14-May-1897 Arthurlie [a] D1-1 (Friendly)
- Arthurlie were the better team in the 1st half and were worth their 1-0 lead at h-t thanks to “a smart shot”. Thistle had several good chances but the forwards were ineffectual. In the 2nd half for a time “play was devoid of interest” (GH) but a free-kick from Auchincloss (80) earned the draw.
Tue-14-May-1889 Linthouse [a] D2-2 (Friendly)
- The match started out as the replay to the MCC tie but in his only game for the club McFarlane of Thistle broke his leg and it was decided to call it a friendly. Linthouse took a 2-goal lead but Thistle fought back to 2-2. Nothing much happened after the long stoppage for the injury.
Sat-14-May-1887 1st Renfrew R.V. [a] W4-2 (Greenock Charity Cup Semi Final)
- Academy Park. The match was “stubbornly fought” (SC) and stood at 1-1 at h-t. Thistle always had a bit more to offer and although they had to cope with a spell of pressure and conceded a goal, they saw the game out comfortably. “The Volunteers somewhat surprised the spectators by their good play” (GT).
