Reeves goes Elvis… sort of. This was the soundtrack to the first and only movie that he made, interesting if a bit corny. Shot in South Africa in 1963, the story tells of a ramblin', gamblin', guitar-strummin' man from Dixie, trying to strike it rich in the Kimberley Diamond region. The movie and the soundtrack were released after he died in a plane crash in 1964 and, although it was rushed into the booming South African movie theatres in 1964, the film was never shown in the States. On the sountrack album, Jim falls deep into cabaret-crooner territory for most of the duration, and the set even comes complete with breaks for orchestras and showtime choruses. The only track that's not completely dire is the one which flirts with country themes, “Roving Gambler”, but by then I'm too disillusioned to care.
