“Bruised Orange” by John Prine - album review

TJR says

Disillusioned with Atlantic, the 31-year-old singer-songwriter jumped ship to Asylum Records and, after a lot of wasted efforts, he appointed a new producer for the project. It was the enthusiasm of fellow Chicagoan, Steve Goodman, regarded as a musician's musician, which sealed the deal for Prine, who was on the verge of calling it quits for the project. Said Prine: “I talked to, Christ, twenty different producers, really great guys, great producers. Big-time producers. And I just didn’t want to do it. I just didn’t have the heart to do the record again. And Goodman said he would do it. I totally put it in his hands. And he handed me back a beautiful record.” Tellingly, the album's major highlight, “Sabu Visits The Twin Cities Alone”, focuses firmly on John's vocal, the lightly acoustic instrumentation letting him do what he does best - tell a story. He imagines himself - the lonely touring musician - as Sabu, the boy who rode his elephant into camps various to help people with problems, before riding off into the sunset, dazed and confused. Ha, the lie-dream of the pop-glamour scene! All in all, I'm not as enamoured as I was with his early 70s work; “Bruised Orange” has appealing moments, but it's often just that bit too poppy for me.
