As I'm led to believe, this October, 1981, release was designed to combat bootleggers, which seems fair enough. It's made up of 9 studio cuts and 11 live recordings. At the end of side C, the live version of “Twenty Four Hours” is unlisted and therefore treated as a hidden track and ignored in the stats. All bar 2 tracks are previously unreleased. “Glass” was first released on the 2 x 7" EP “A Factory Sample” (Factory FAC-2) in December, 1978, whilst “Dead Souls” appeared as the b-side to the French issue of “Atmosphere” in March, 1980. Peel session versions of “Exercise One” and “The Sound Of Music” had been heard in 1979, but these studio versions mark the physical release debuts for the songs. The first 9 tracks would have constituted a bona-fide new studio album (rated 7.33), but the 11 live versions of back catalogue material scupper that notion. For me, the live stuff is a waste of time, who needs weedy thin recordings like this? As far as I'm concerned, live music's to be enjoyed there and then, in person, in the moment.
