“In The Court Of The Crimson King” by King Crimson - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1969 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die |
Revered debut album from the Prog-Rock quintet from London who lined up: Robert Fripp (electric and acoustic guitars), Michael Giles (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Greg Lake (lead vocals, bass guitar), Ian McDonald (saxophone, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, mellotron, harpsichord, piano, organ, vibraphone, backing vocals) and Peter Sinfield (lyrics, illumination). It opens excitingly with big riffs and explosive saxophones on “21st Century Schizoid Man”, but soon loses it's way (for me) once the noodling takes hold. The album did well for them, despite the lack of promotion, it's reputation won via word-of-mouth by fans keen on this dynamic new style of music.
