“Kudala Besibiza” by Mahlathini - album review
features in: (B-list) Album Chart of 1978 ● (B-list) Album Chart of the 1970s |
A truly excellent compilation of the mid-70s work of the great Mahlathini, although he doesn't actually perform on the awesome highlight track, “Isitmela”, a 7" b-side from '76. At least he wrote it! Undoubtedly channeling Kingston's 60s rhythms, that particular cut seems to me a pure conduit between Prince Buster and The Beat. Not that either would have been aware of it, so buried to the world was South Africa's 70s treasure-trove. See notes to read more about the album from historian Nick Lotay.
