While I was listening to this over again for the review I was so appalled by what I was hearing that I started to doubt that I'd ever liked this guy's work in the first place. Checking back over my database ratings I'm nodding my head in appreciation at “Wherever I Lay My Hat” (1962), “Hitch Hike” (1962), “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever” (1968), “Gonna Give Her All The Love I’ve Got” (1969), “Gonna Keep On Tryin’ Till I Win Your Love” (1969), “I Wish It Would Rain” (1969) and “Too Busy Thinking About My Baby” (1969). What happened to the guy who delivered all that good stuff? Smooth 70s R n B happened that's what. In my book, 1971s “What’s Going On” was a lame affair and 1973s “Let’s Get It On” was even worse - terrible in fact. And now, 5 years on, here we have “Here, My Dear”, a dire new low where he's bitching the whole time about his marriage break-up. Cringeworthy, self-absorbed and unsexy. And four miserable sides to get through too! Whole world loves it. Whole world's mad.
