“Let’s Get It On” by Marvin Gaye - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1973 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1970s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die |
A new direction for the 34-year-old smooth soul man, three years in the making, shaded with a light touch of funk, essentially the new R n B. Much is promised with the alluring lead single, “Let’s Get It On”, which opens the set in fine fashion. The 4th track in, “Keep Gettin' It On”, pretty much serves as part 2 of the same message, the same cool groove. Alas, it's all downhill from there as far as my sensibilities go; a sappy and feeble endurance test. It's ranked by many as one of the greatest albums of all-time. Such critics are to be viewed with the deepest suspicion.
