Amazingly, the fifth solo album from the 20-year-old singer arrived 4 years after the preceding “Forever, Michael”. By now, he had switched to Epic Records and was working with Quincy Jones as producer for the first time. Jones literally built him a band from members of the Brothers Johnson and Rufus, along with Stevie Wonder's keyboard player, Greg Philanganes. No one can argue against what they created; these razor-sharp and ultra-modern pop-funk licks were almost like a new sonic template for music of that ilk. The sales results were, quite literally, off the wall, giving him his biggest hit at home (#3) and in the UK (#3), with multi-million unit sales all across the world breaking him into new markets galore. He became the first solo artist to have four singles from the same album make the Top 10 of the US pop charts; “Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough” (#1), “Rock With You” (#1), “Off The Wall” (#10) and “She's Out Of My Life” (#10). A cover of “Girlfriend” (Wings, 1978) was released as a single in the UK, but stalled at #41. Jackson's opener aside, the album holds no appeal for me, and I'd go so far as to say that once you get passed the title-track it's packed full of hugely detestable drivel.
