It had been thought they were disbanded but Pere Ubu returned for a fourth album in three years, “The Art of Walking” being delivered in June, 1980. For the first time in their album story, there's a change to the line-up, with guitarist Tom Herman failing to emerge after the brief split, his place being taken by Mayo Thompson of Red Krayola. The new quintet are: David Thomas (vocals, organ), Mayo Thompson (guitar, piano, backing vocals), Allen Ravenstine (synthesizers), Tony Maimone (bass, piano, organ) and Scott Krauss (drums, horn, piano, drum machine). It's a difficult record to get into, but intriguing all the same, as they delve ever-deeper into the avant-garde with their anti-rock structures. Even 10 or 12 times around I still don't feel I've realized the full potential of the thing; it may well be my appreciation will grow. As it stands, this is the lowest rated album of the four, mainly due to the fact that noise annoys on the pointless freakzone effort “Young Miles In The Basement” and the whitenoise aural assault of album closer “Crush Horn”.
