“Sweet And Sour Tears” by Ray Charles - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1964 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s |

Released January, 1964. The latest in a long line of Ray’s concept albums, this time featuring 12 cover songs (I wonder why he doesn’t seem to write much anymore?) with titles or lyrics referring to crying. Wow, critics love deep dudes. Supposedly, this concept was engineered in an attempt to console the States, deep in mourning after the Kennedy assassination of November, 1963. It’s a crass stinker to my ears - “A Tear Fell” (Teresa Brewer, 1956) is the only thing which sounds remotely cool here. It’s also the only song which sounds remotely black. Just sayin’…
