“King Of The Delta Blues Singers, Vol. II” by Robert Johnson - album review

TJR says

Those in control of the small Robert Johnson catalogue took their time with the follow-up, but “King Of The Delta Blues Singers, Vol. II” was worth the nine year wait. Side one was recorded in November 1936 and features some truly fantastic cuts such as “I Believe I’ll Dust My Broom”, “Sweet Home Chicago” and “Ramblin’ On My Mind”. The great “Phonograph Blues” appears on record for the first time. Brilliantly, the album cover depicts one of these recording sessions, set in a makeshift studio in a San Antonio hotel room. Side two, all recorded in June, 1937, isn't quite so clear cut, featuring 4 single sides from back in the day, together with 1 previously unreleased song “Drunken Hearted Man” as well as three alternative takes. Album closer “Love In Vain” is the major highlight on a brilliant set. Not only has Willie Mae left him, but he's gotta carry her bags to the station. Man's got the BLUES and deep down he's RAGING. All he can do is stare, transfixed, dewy-eyed, as the blurry lights of the departing train seep into his very soul: “When the train, it left the station, With two lights on behind, When the train, it left the station, With two lights on behind, Well, the blue light was my blues, And the red light was my mind, All my love's in vain”. What a man.
