This all-instrumental classical Indian affair is a concept album which follows a day in the life of an Indian shepherd from Kashmir, the sleeve notes helping us on our way. Telling the story through their playing are: Shivkumar Sharma (santoor/dulcimer), Hariprasad Chaurasia (bansuri/flute), Brijbhushan Kabra (slide guitar) and Manikrao Popatkar (tabla). My highlight track is “Bhoop”, a captivating raga from these beguiling talents; a mini-symphony with strings, woodwind and light percussion. This is movement 1 of side 2 and the sleeve notes tell us that… “the sun has just made a majestic exit in the west and it is now twilight; the birds are hurrying back to their nests and the sheep are being herded back after a day-long grazing in plenty of fun, frolic and feasting” …it goes on… but you can make up your own story from there ; - )
