“Dance To The Music” by Sly and The Family Stone - album review

features in: Album Chart of 1968Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s

TJR says

The second LP from the soulful and funky San Franciscan ensemble with the core line up: Sly Stone (vocals, multiple instruments), Freddie Stone (vocals, guitar), Rose Stone (vocals, keyboards), Cynthia Robinson (trumpet), Greg Errico (drums), Jerry Martini (saxophone) and Larry Graham (bass). The album opens with the title-track, an anthemic and feel-good Top 10 pop hit, with various group members taking turns on the mic to encourage the people to get on up and dance. Message-wise, side one ends as it begins on “Dance To The Medley : Music Is Alive / Dance In / Music Lover” as they directly talk to us: “hey music lover!” The brotherhood is strong on this album and they're not found wanting for positive energy.
