In the late 70s and early 80s, DJs on both sides of the Atlantic were producing and playing their own bootleg mixes incorporating hits of the day as well as sixties oldies. The white label productions were popular on dancefloors, but such records could never be feasible or commercially viable as legal releases, due to expensive copyright minefields. By chance, former Golden Earring drummer, Japp Eggermont, by now a record producer, heard one such mix featuring The Beatles, and had the brainwave to mimick these bootlegs by recreating them in the studio with his own session players and singers. Bas Muys from the Dutch group Smyle sang the voice of John Lennon, Hans Vermeulen from Sandy Coast was George Harrison, and Okkie Huysdens sung the Paul McCartney parts. A linking piece was especially written to introduce the songs with the tag line “The Stars on 45 keep on turning in your mind”, sung by Jody Pijper, and introducing the booming beat which underpinned all the mixes. The debut LP was rush released within several weeks of the first single, greatly expanding upon the Beatles section. I should point out, Eggermont's group released the exact same records under different names in different territories, and that I'm referring to the group in their British guise as “Starsound”, although their records were billed to “Stars On 45” in the Netherlands and in the States. The album made #9 in the Billboard 200 and went all the way to #1 in the UK, ending the year as the 10th best-selling album of 1981. The success of Eggermont's productions started a craze for a myriad of copycats copying these copycats. The Hallmark Records Top of the Pops nightmare was back to haunt music lovers.
