Ninth album from the San-Francisco-based rocker, his new core group recreated as a trio since 1973's “The Joker”. They line up: Steve Miller (vocals, guitar, keyboards, sitar), Lonnie Turner (bass guitar) and Gary Mallaber (drums, percussion). Throughout, Steve's use of his new ARP Odyssey synthesizer gives a strange kraut-in-usa-rock sensory experience. I'm not quite convinced. The album was, as expected, a big Top 3 success in the US and, for the first time, charted in the UK, peaking at #11. It houses four single releases; “Fly Like An Eagle” (#2), “Serenade” (didn't chart), “Take The Money And Run” (#11) and “Rock ‘n’ Me” (#1), which takes inspiration from Free's “Alright Now” and makes it seem kinda cool, against all the odds. Inexplicably, this is followed with an offensively dull rendition of “You Send Me” (Sam Cooke, 1957). What was he thinking? Finding a bit of late album cred, “Sweet Maree” (the 45 flip to “Rock ‘n’ Me”) delivers acoustic-then-electric blues authentically, thanks to some neat harmonica by the pucker guest, James Cotton.
