On the ratings front, I include the 17 LP tracks, but exclude the bonus 4 track single that came with the album. The 2LP set was released in September, 1976, and became the best-selling and most critically acclaimed album of his career, which must have come as some relief to Berry Gordy as the Motown boss had paid an eye-watering sum, reportedly $37M (in 1975!) to keep the man in his stable. Extraordinarily, it went straight in at #1 in the American album chart, and gave him his biggest album hit yet in the UK, peaking at #2. Four singles proper were released from the set; “I Wish” (#1), “Sir Duke” (#1), “Another Star” (#32) and “As” (#36). According to rebel sensibilities, one good, one decent and one average track represents a very poor return from seventeen. I really can't stand this new contemporary R n B era, but who could fail to admire the man?
