The LP “Weekend In London” (Epic LN 24139) was released in the USA in April 1965. Second album of 1965, once again its “America Only”. What was wrong with these people? Bof. (That’s a cuss. “France only”.) Maybe it was just as well. Who would want to hear competent covers of “Blue Suede Shoes” in 1965 anyway? I wonder if they weren’t just sounding a bit too old fashioned already. The pop sweetness of “Hurting Inside” is pure Beatles ’63. I’ve not got the tooth for it. The chorus hook of “Hurting Inside” sings “I’ll Never Know”. The next song is actually titled “I’ll Never Know” and also sings “I’ll Never Know” in the chorus. Aaargh. This band were realy annoying like that. The all-acoustic “Til The Right One Comes Along” breaks the mould. It recalls Buddy Holly. In my head I can hear John Lennon going “wooooh”. Nice harmonies. “I’m Thinking” rocks out a bit more, surely this is the way forward. At this point, the DC5 seem to sit uncomfortably between Gerry and The Pacemakers and The Kinks. It’s hard to trust ’em. Are they just karma chameleons? Well-constructed songs, some very neat harmonizing, but feck all to grip onto. On this evidence you’d judge them a bland band… and this set is average all the way…
