With Holland-Dozier-Holland having recently left the company in a royalties dispute, the new Four Tops LP included just one last song from the collective, “I’m In A Different World”, one of the few passable moments on show. I’m never going to go down as a major fan of the commercial Motown sound but can easily get down with fine Four Tops sides such as “Walk Away Renee” and “7-Rooms Of Gloom” which had appeared on last years record. Unfortunately, nothing here gets remotely close to the those stylish soul pop songs. Some of this LP provoked me to comment “it’s all gone down a very dodgy cabaret route”. The covers of “Sunny” and “Daydream Believer” do not help, and by the time of the slushy ballad “Once Upon A Time” my tolerance levels are at breaking point. Just one year after the “Reach Out” LP and, already, yesterday’s dreams are in a different world…
