Following the success of last years self-titled debut (Top 20 in the UK) they stuck with producer Steve Lillywhite at Columbia, and the sextet remained: Richard Butler (vocals), John Ashton (guitar), Roger Morris (guitar), Tim Butler (bass guitar), Duncan Kilburn (saxophone, keyboards) and Vince Ely (drums, percussion). Two of the albums three singles entered the lower reaches of the UK charts; “Mr. Jones” (-), “Dumb Waiters” (#59) and “Pretty In Pink” (#43), whilst the album broke the Billboard 100 at home, peaking at #89. With their unique brand of American Pop Rock and British Post-Punk their progress was slow, but it was steady and held great appeal for the musically literate, due to the perfectly poised players and the ever-engaging sardonic drawl of the frontman, who cuts like a knife: “The one who insists he was first in the line is the last to remember her name”. Ooft. Poor Caroline.
