“Elephant Mountain” by The Youngbloods - album review
features in: Album Chart of 1969 ● Album Chart of the Decade: 1960s ● 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die |
With the departure of co-founder Jerry Corbitt, the core three were now: Jesse Colin Young (bass, lead vocals), Lowell Levinger (guitar, backing vocals, electric piano) and Joe Bauer (drums). Session men supplemented with fiddle, tenor saxophone, trumpet and vibraphone. There's a brightness to the music, although “Darkness, Darkness” and “Quicksand” are songs dealing with depression and suicide. Ultimately, the jazzy inflections kill the vibe for me personally, but I can see why this album is so highly regarded in many quarters.
